A first look at the Fujifilm Mini 8 Instax, and you would be reminded of the first instant, mass market camera introduced by Polaroid sometime in 1940. In an age when D-SLRs and smartphones reign supreme, Fujifilm’s Instax camera can still give its customers a run for money, given the retro images that it produces and the emotion associated with it that will take the user down the memory lane, to some 15-20 years back when analogue role film cameras were prevalent.
The Instax series instant cameras from Fujifilm is said to have been well accepted in countries outside India, while the response in the country is yet to be seen. Fujifilm India has launched a total of five products in the Instax range – Mini 8, Mini 25, Mini 50S, Mini 90 and Wide range.
Mini 8 is a basic point and shoot camera. Using instant print technology, Mini 8 gives instant print, that develops gradually and the suspense keeps building on in the eyes of the user till the print does not get sharpened, which happens in a few minutes.
The Camera Body
Talking about the design of the product, it has a compact body, a colourful matte, plastic finish design and is available in seven different colours. The camera which we have received is pink and the colour, I suppose will add to the excitement of using it to click instant pictures of your near and dear ones.
The Brightness adjustment dial enables the user to adjust the exposure level and take photos in different modes. The different exposure levels are – Indoors, Night, Cloudy, Shade, Sunny, Slightly cloudy, Sunny and bright. These settings come just below the lens. We tried experimenting with it and have taken pictures both indoors and outdoors in natural light, and the outcome has been quite satisfactory. Given the experimental nature of today’s generation, they would like clicking their pictures in different lighting conditions.
It takes two AA batteries. You also need to buy the film pack separately that comes in a pack of 10. And oh yes, you have to get your frame right the first time, if you do not waste too many of these packs.
The Target Group
The easy-to-use features present in the camera make it suitable for use for different age groups; from kids to teenagers, to adults and professionals, everyone can try their hands at it and not miss the fun of emotionally connecting with their loved ones by bringing out their instant pictures. But most importantly the requirements of the younger age group are kept in mind while designing the product. Ladies and kids will also have a good experience using this product as it comes with a simple operational system, is easy to use and does not involve too much of technicalities. The photographer just needs to look through the viewfinder, focus at the subject and take the shot. So the next time you throw up a special birthday party for your kid, you can set up a photo booth, take a photo of your guest and hand the image as a memory instantly.
The Best Travel Partner
In our opinion, the camera works the best way in shaping up our memories while travelling. So when you are on your vacation, you can have all your memories stored in the form of these Polaroid images. You can also leave a one-liner about the place visited in the white border provided in the bottom of the images that will leave a lasting memory. The best part is that though the design looks bulky, it weighs just 307g and is handy for carrying it even while travelling.
The camera comes with a 1 year warranty and the price is Rs 6441. The film pack would cost you Rs. 1000.
